7 Tips for Great Golden Years!
Keep the following in mind as your canine or feline companion eases into his or
her senior years.
1. There are many medical conditions common to older pets. Be aware of the symptoms as well as the recommended treatment for them. Arthritis, diminished hearing and eyesight are common as pets age.
2. Feed a diet designed for your companion's needs. There are many foods that have been developed for senior dogs and cats.
3. Do not overfeed. Just like people, as a pet ages his or her
metabolism changes. Too many treats will be harder to work off and obesity can
shorten his life. Several small meals instead of one large meal will help keep
his system
more evenly regulated.
4. Exercise is important, but make sure to adjust your companion's workout to
his or her abilities. Regular,
consistent exercise is much better for an aging pet than a vigorous Frisbee
chase once or twice a week.
5. Establish a good relationship with a veterinarian you trust. Schedule
veterinary visits every six months. A
routine exam could help to detect the onset of a medical condition or problem.
6. Groom your feline or canine friend regularly. As pets age -grooming can
become more difficult. Brush your
companion more frequently. Learn a few massage techniques that will help
stimulate the skin and blood flow and will ease muscle stiffness.
7. Spend quality time with your aging companions. Keep them interested, active and happy.
