Got the Winter Doldrums?  It’s Time for Fun in the Sun! Take a vacation and give your pet one too!  While you’re off in a warm and wonderful place, your pet will be enjoying daily massages, extra exercise, tons of love and attention, and lots of belly-rubs!

You can’t own a cat, the best you can do is be partners.  Sir Harry Swanson

Cheesy Dog Biscuits

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cup whole wheat flower
  • 1 ¼ cup grated cheddar cheese
  • ¼ pound corn oil margarine
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • Pinch of salt

Grate cheese and let stand to room temperature.  Cream cheese with softened margarine, garlic, salt, and flour.  Add enough milk to form into a ball.  Chill for ½ hour.  Roll onto floured  board.  Cut into shapes and bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes or until slightly brown and firm.  Makes 2-3 dozen.  Charles Mims, Published in Wisconsin Humane Society Literature.

Trimming Your Pet's Nails.  Nail trimming is easily done at home.  It only takes a few minutes and can save you money.  All you need is a good nail trimmer.

Teach your pet to be relaxed and cooperative during nail trims.  It is very difficult, if not impossible to trim the nails otherwise.  If your pet is tense, try this:

1.  Handle his paws regularly.  Teach him that each time you gently handle a paw he gets a treat.  If he tenses up or pulls away--no treat.  Or distract him from your toe touching by giving him peanut butter to lick.  Slowly require more and more handling until you are able to manipulate each toe without having him pull away.

2.  When relaxed, touch the clipper to each nail.  The feel of metal against his toenails will become comfortable and expected.  Use treats!

If you trim nails regularly, you will be able to tell if they are too long by sight. Typically, when the nail begins to curve, it is time to trim.  If your pet has dark nails, clip each at the curve.  Clip clear nails just before the pink quick (bloodline) inside the nail.

If your pet has really long nails, trim short amounts at a time to avoid cutting the quick.  If you accidentally do cut the quick (ouch!), stop the bleeding by applying styptic powder. Wisconsin Humane Society Literature
